A romantic comedy set in 17th century France.
A satire on acedemic pretention, female education, and preciousness.
Two young people, Henriette and Clitandre are in love. In order for them to marry, they must get the consent of Henriette’s parents. Her father, Chrysale, a reasonable man, is in favor of this marriage, but her mother, Philamente, isn’t.
Philamente, supported by Henriette’s aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotin, a “scholar” and mediocre poet, who has these three women completely under his thumb. For they are obsessed with learning and culture of the most pretentious kind.
